Tourist spot - Philippines

December 1, 2009

The Philippines is blessed with many natural resources and there are hundreds of destinations to choose from. But for the best of the best, heres a top five list of the must-see tourist destinations in the Philippines.

Puerto Galera | Philippines

Mindoros waters and Puerto Galera is a divers paradise with reefs that is considered one of the best in the world. Four hours south of Manila via boat and a ferry, Puerto Galera in the island of Mindoro is home to the famous White Beach which has a wide array of accommodations, restaurants, nightlife and beach activities to choose from. There is also Sabang Beach which is likewise famous for diving and its vibrant nightlife. For those who are more serious about having a quiet time, you can try Aninuan and Talipanan Beach.
The Cordilleras | Philippines

The Cordillera region is located in the mountainous central area of Luzon, and is home to the famous Banaue Rice Terraces as well as the hanging coffins of Ifugao. Baguio city is the regions center, which is also a good tourist destination in itself with its numerous parks and other attractions. The Banaue Rice Terraces encompassed by the provinces of Ifugao, Benguet, Mountain Province and Apayao, is a UNESCO world heritage site because of its historical significance and sheer magnificence.
The Ilocos Region | Philippines

The Ilocos region occupies the northwestern face of Luzon Island in the Philippines. This belt, which includes the provinces of Pangasinan, La Union, Ilocos Sur and Ilocos Norte, is a great destination if you wou would like to soak up some culture, history and of course, some fun in the beach! Pangasinan is home to the natural wonder, Hundred Islands Natural Park, a group of 124 islands with three developed for tourism. La Union is known as the surfing capital of the north, with waves especially suited for surfing in San Juan. Ilocos Norte is home to UNESCO world heritage site Vigan, a Spanish colonial town that was thankfully spared from bombing during the war. Ilocos Norte is known for being the hometown of former dictator Ferdinand Marcos, whose body still lies in wake for the public to see in his native Batac. It is also home to centuries old churches as well as the famous white sand beach, Pagudpud.
Bohol | Philippines

Bohol is nestled between the Visayas and Mindanao region of the Philippines and is home to pristine white beaches as well as the worlds smallest primate, the Philippines Tarsier. It is also famous for the natural formation Chocolate Hills, a collection of small which look like little chocolate kisses that extend beyond the horizon.

Boracay Island | Philippines

Of course, no trip would be complete without a visit to Boracay Island, considered one of the best beaches in the world. Some tourists visit the Philippines for the sole purpose of experiencing this island alone. The island is known for its clean white sand beaches, crystal clear waters, numerous watersport activities, top-end resorts, restaurants and other R&R facilities.

Marinduque:

November 30, 2009

Marinduque, my small heart-shaped province, 30 minutes by air, south of Manila is known worldwide as the Lenten Capital of the Southern Tagalog Region because of its Moriones Festival during Holy Week . Today, the provincial government under the leadership of Governor Bong Carrion is promoting Marinduque as the Ecotourism Capital of the Philippines.

The provincial government ecotourism projects are headed by Head of the Tourism Department, Gerry Jamilla and Allan Jay Velesco, Provincial Administrator. The first project starting development this year is the ECO Park at the Luzon 1911 Datum site in Silangan, Mogpog. The Luzon1911 Datum marker and location established that it was the geodetic point marker for all map makers of the country. Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) of the Philippines in their document dated July 31, 2007 refers to this triangulation document that this marker is the geographical center of Marinduque as well as of the Philippines . It’s coordinates are: 13 degrees, 33 minutes and 39.82 seconds NORTH and 121 degrees, 52 minutes and 8.17 seconds EAST. This site has received support from National Mapping Resource and Information Authority( NAMRIA) . From what I heard the development of an ECO park has been started by NAMRIA and is now becoming a popular tourist spot for those who love to hike as well as for bikers. The view at the top of the hill is spectacular. The hike is quite hard for senior citizens, but a not too hard a walk for the young and adventurous.

Several other tourist attractions and sites are now considered for development under the Green Tourism Concept by the Provincial Government. These are the Sibuyao Falls in Torrijos, the Palo Maria White Beach in Maniwaya Island and the Tarug Caves in Mogpog. The Palo Maria white beach is touted to be an alternative to Boracay. In addition to the above tourist destinations, the private resort, Bellarocca Island Resort and Spa that was completed last year has already attracted a lot of tourists from Japan and Korea. It was design to look like Santorini Island, Greece where all the building are white and sticking on the cliffs.

Just recently, a hidden cave and subterranean river was discovered in San Isidro, Santa Cruz. This discovery brought a lot of excitement to the tourism officials as well as the local barangay officials. Inside the cave, the clear white water of the river are big shrimps and eels and a small waterfall. The caves are inhabited by swallows and huge bats. It will take 2 hours to complete exploration of the caves and the underground river. If this is develop and preserve, it will be a good competition of the Palawan subterranean river system in attracting tourists all over the world. Palawan’s subterranean river is the most visited tourist spot in the Philippines. It is listed in the top ten natural wonders of the world.

Governor Carrion’s in his State of the Province address last year, emphasized the concept of Green Tourism. He stressed that Green Tourism brings together elements of ecology, cultural, agriculture, and even sports or adventure Travel. He said, there are several labels used to refer to Green Tourism today, but he said the definition remains the same. Low impact and environmentally friendly tourism that cherishes, not destroy. Green tourism offers leisure and learning activities where visitors are encourage to enjoy nature and culture, and interchange with the locals in agricultural, mountain or fishing village settings. Carrion said that as a Market Strategy, Green Tourism is most ideal for Marinduque Island Setting. He says it taps into the growing demand for more Holidays and that concerns for the Environment and Global Warming grows daily- so that ecotourism will certainly increase in number for the long term and in the future years.

There is another project that the province has been involved-the Forest Project by DBP/DENR.

This involves watershed rehabilitation, fruit tree forestation and mangrove rehabilitation.

in an aggregate area of 500 hectares as authorized by DENR( Dept of Environment and Natural Resources). Retired General Recaredo Sarmiento, former chief PNP, is the Project Consultant for the Forestation Project. To date about 61 hectares have been covered, 18 hectares at Brgy Canat have been planted with fruit trees, 27 hectares of fruit and forest trees in Santa Cruz and Torrijos and another 15.5 hectares of mangroves have been rehabilitated also in Santa Cruz and Torrijos. Directly benefiting in this program are 33 cooperatives, 33 barangays equivalent to 175 families.

In line with the above topic, the Governor issued an Executive Order declaring Green Tourism as the OTOP ( One town, One Product) of the province. There are other tourist attraction being developed not directly related to Ecotourism. These are Battle of Pulang Lupa Commemoration, Araw Ng Marinduque and the annual Moriones Festival. I hope that in the next ten years, Ecotourism will be a success in my poor beloved island of Marinduque-The Heart of the Philippines.

Destination - Subic

November 28, 2009

Subic, in the heart of Olongapo City, is popularly known for its grandiose mercantile establishments like the Royale Subic, its tourists destinations like the vast cavern of wild animals in Zoobic and of course, its sometimes adorable and pesky monkeys that dart out from behind trees to climb telephone poles and wires overhead.

What used to be a naval base for both the American and Spanish colonies now has become a haven for luscious commercial and industrial complex for both foreign and local nationalities.

But the sights and sounds of Subic go beyond that.

In the near distance, overlooking the seashore of Subic Bay, lies tales of Subics historic past a fleet of army ships bobbing quietly amidst the flurry noises of tourists posing and aiming to picture an unforgettable moment with such a monumental event in our history, and in our life.

Hundreds of years ago, Subic was conquered by the Americans which they plan to develop into a commercial ground. But the onset of World War I and World War II offset the Americans plans to develop Subic, where the third conqueror, the Japanese, took over. Unlike the Spanish and the Americans, the Japanese treated the place with cruelty and brutality.

A certain Filipino citizen, Ramon Magsaysay, who later became a loving and affectionate president of the Philippines, led the revolt against the Japanese. Together with the Americans, they threw the Japanese off the island, forming an ally that benefited the people of Subic.

Just like the time that they occupied Subic before the Japanese came, the Americans turned the place into a course on survival training.

One of the people who aided the Americans and exposed them into an independent life was a modern, yet an aborigine, who came to Subic to seek greener pastures.

The trails along Pamulaklakin (meaning to flower in English) in Subic led to a quaint cottage at the outskirts of the woods which housed the one person who taught the Americans everything they needed to know about surviving in the wild.

The Pamulaklakin jungle trail in Subic Clad in a loose shirt and tight-fitting shorts, Dominador Liwanag didnt look like an ordinary citizen of Subic, apart from his suit. Known as Tata Kasuy, he wore a baseball cap, which had curly white tresses peeking out from underneath and a bolo at his side not only to thwart of unexpected visits from some untamed animals but also to support his fellow comrades in leafing out trees for medicinal purposes.

Leaving his cottage, he wore a wide smile on his lips, noting that he was used to be frequented with visitors. His fast strides didnt show the true meaning of his age.

They were very kind to me, he said in straight English, whispering softly as he sidestepped on leaves. They always treated me like their god. But, of course, I refuse to be called just that. Afterall, I only taught them the basic things they needed to know about living in the jungle.

Walking quite softly on the ground, he then proceeded to swipe a bamboo tree with his bolo, scraping the skin a few inches deep. Bamboo is very useful in medicine, he said, this time, in Tagalog. You can cook with this one. You can use it to make weapons to protect yourself. He then proceeded to demonstrate some other stuff and technique that he was able to teach the Americans knowing a bamboos real age through its skin, cutting it lengthwise which served as a boiling pot and for curing illnesses like diarrhea, migraine and asthma.

As the day ended with his revelation, he beamed with only one message in mind that the Americans were, in fact, very much useful to the protection of Subic against foreign invaders.

And so, with the help of foreign and local nationalities, Subic was forever changed - from a naval fortress to a land of opportunities.

The Spaniards and Americans succeeded not only in turning Subic into one of the tourist hot spots in the Philippines but also into a legacy of being an in-line destination to one of the greatest stories of history the world over.

If you’re worried about language barriers being factor, Cebu is populated by English Speaking Filipinos, more fluent in fact than their civilian brothers in Manila, the capital city of the Philippines.

Discover the beauty of Isla Reta

November 27, 2009

Isla Reta is one of the nice beaches in Talikud Island, which is a part of the bigger island, The Island Garden City of Samal, Mindanao, Philippines. While it only takes a ten-minute boat ride to get to Samal Island from Davao City, the trip to Talikud Island takes around 30-45 minutes, but it is well worth the trip.

Isla Reta’s beach is breathtaking! The sand is powdery and light brown to dirty white, and as you near the water, pebbles and bleached broken corals line the beach. The water is cool, invigorating and crystal clear. If you are planning to spend some time there, don’t forget your snorkeling gear so you can take a look at the splendid various marine life and growing young corals there. On Isla Reta you won’t find any luxury restaurants or hotels. It is just a simple white-sand beachfront spot. This is a tropical vacation idea where you can relax your mind and body with nature’s paradise.
